We understand that the journey of mental health is unique for each individual, and we are here to guide and support you every step of the way. At Positive Growth Counseling Inc., we specialize in addressing a range of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD, among others. Our approach is grounded in warmth and compassion, creating a safe and nonjudgmental space where you can freely express your thoughts and feelings. We believe that healing begins with a strong therapeutic relationship, and we are dedicated to providing you with the support you need to navigate life's challenges. Our team of experienced and licensed mental health professionals is well-versed in various therapeutic modalities. We recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all solution, which is why we tailor our approach to your unique needs. Some of the therapeutic approaches we integrate into our practice include: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This approach helps you identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviors, empowering you to develop healthier coping mechanisms and strategies to manage your emotions. Psychodynamic Therapy: By exploring the unconscious and past experiences, psychodynamic therapy helps uncover underlying patterns that may be contributing to your current struggles. This insight can lead to profound self-discovery and transformation. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills: DBT equips you with practical skills to regulate your emotions, enhance interpersonal effectiveness, and cultivate mindfulness. These skills are particularly beneficial for managing intense emotions and creating balance in your life. Supportive Therapy: Our warm and empathetic therapists provide a supportive environment where you can openly discuss your feelings and experiences. This therapeutic approach promotes a sense of connection and validation, fostering healing through genuine human connection. At Positive Growth Counseling Inc., we honor your unique journey and respect the pace at which you're comfortable progressing. We believe that therapy is a collaborative process, and we work with you to set goals and milestones that align with your aspirations for personal growth and well-being. My work is based on the belief that caring for our mental health is an essential part of our overall wellbeing. I collaborate with my clients to help them understand their strengths and gain insight into themselves, experiment with new ways of interacting with others, and learn new skills to work towards cultivating fulfilling lives. As part of this process I strive to create a warm, empathic environment, and I prioritize developing therapeutic relationships with clients based on authenticity and trust. I draw from client-centered therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based therapy techniques in my work. As a generalist, I am experienced in helping individuals with a broad range of concerns including anxiety/stress, mood difficulties, identity, career and school concerns, life transitions, and relationship difficulties. I have trained and worked in several college counseling centers over the years, including large state schools as well as smaller private schools. I enjoy working with both undergraduate and graduate students. If you are interested in the possibility of working together, please EMAIL me to inquire about a free phone consultation.

Do you feel paralyzed by the uncertainty of these challenging times? Is it difficult to find the time to slow down and take a breath? Are you often lonely or worried about what other people think of you? If any of these sound like you, then you've come to the right place. I strive to create a safe, non-judgmental space where we can address anxiety, depression, and perfectionism openly through identifying and exploring underlying disappointments, losses, and traumas. Through this process, we’ll work together to rewrite your “story of loss” into a “story of growth.” It is my goal that students will be able to use the safety of our relationship to learn how to approach life’s difficulties with curiosity instead of fear. As a “recovering academic,” I know how hard it can be to balance school, family, friends, and self-care. Central to my work with students is a commitment to antiracist, anti-capitalist practice. In our work together, we’ll examine how systemic factors influence your worldview and the challenges you face. My approach to therapy is focused on providing emotional support, normalizing what you're going through, and finding ways to make more space for yourself. Above all, it is my priority that therapy is a refuge from day-to-day suffering where we can work together to find joy.

I like to think of therapy as a journey of inner exploration and I am along as a guide. I believe that therapy is most effective when it is a combination of intellectual understanding and emotional experience. In that regard, it feels like your feelings are our road signs that we are in the right track to self-growth. I try to not have a specific agenda going into sessions, but rather to go where it is you feel like you need to go at that time. I believe that it is my role to create a safe space for you to express and explore whatever it is that is inside you. Compassion is key, and cultivating self-compassion is one of the most important elements of therapy. I look forward to helping you explore and become more self-aware and self-compassionate!

Therapy approach A relationship between you and your therapist is a primary ingredient fostering meaningful change and personal growth. My approach is warm, open, and empathic. I listen deeply and engage actively as is helpful. My goal is to create a space where you feel safe to be your authentic self, free from judgment. You decide whether this is a comfortable setting for you to grow. I am a psychotherapist (LCSW) with a PhD and advanced training from a four-year psychotherapy institute. While I have had the privilege of working with individuals across the lifespan, a majority of my clients have been college age through young career adults. They come from diverse cultural, gender, ethnic, religious, and spiritual backgrounds. I have supported them through challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, often related to issues of this age group: life transitions, family issues, career decisions, dating, parenting, identity, and loss. I draw from a psychodynamic perspective to understand your unique story, while incorporating therapeutic approaches that seem to us to be most helpful for you. Therapy focus I see therapy as a journey we take together. You bring your unique situation and goals. I provide travel skills based on having taken journeys with others. I have never, however, been to your desired destination. You determine the direction and duration of therapy; only you can decide what to focus on and when you feel ready to move forward. While present-day concerns may be paramount, exploring your past can provide valuable insight into your current situation. I interact with you to ensure I understand what you are saying and to help you more fully express your thoughts and feelings. I use a variety of techniques to assist in therapy including role play, homework, journaling, naming aspects of the self, labeling thoughts that are helpful or not to increase your skills in desired areas and decrease those that prevent progress to your goal. All feelings including tears, anger, joy, and laughter can be part of our work together. Communication style I like a relaxed atmosphere that allows us to communicate easily. I am curious. I like to listen. I like to smile but I am also serious. I reflect back to you what I think you are telling me, ask some questions to ensure that I more fully understand what you are saying, encourage you to delve deeper, and wonder with you about when your goals and your actions do not seem aligned. I get to know you not only by what you say but by feelings that may emanate from you. I am comfortable with a broad range of feelings. I support strength and empowerment. I encourage you to let me know what interaction with me is helpful to you and what is not helpful. My goal is to offer a compassionate, thoughtful space where you feel heard and supported. Therapy Goals My goal for you is that you can live fully in the present, understand aspects of your past as they impact the present, and move forward on a path that is best for you. You can let go of people, situations and thought patterns that are not helpful. You can seek and find people and situations that will support you. You can find satisfaction in life and laughter even though everything will not be perfect and parts of life could remain difficult. Our first session After an initial conversation to help us get to know each other, our work together begins. You share the concerns that brought you to therapy, current life situations, and relevant history. I seek to understand what you are telling me as you begin to develop goals for therapy. You let me know how I could be most helpful to you. We begin to explore avenues to your goals and how to measure the progress you seek. This conversation expands over sessions as you feel more comfortable in therapy and as aspects of your life become clearer to you. At the end of this initial session, you can assess whether we could work well together.

I specialize in LGBTQIA+ adults and adolescents with attention to all intersecting identities and lived experience connected to race, ethnicity, religious background, immigration status, ability, socioeconomic status, and trauma history. Particularly in these upending times, I seek to provide a reliable healing space by helping clients find genuine, compassionate connection with oneself and others. Some of the ways I work with clients is to become aware of connections between current challenges and past experience, explore identities freely with attention to each person's unique circumstances, identify needs around interpersonal connection and boundaries, understand the impact of systemic oppression and intergenerational trauma, and foster hope for the future. I take my work very seriously, but also naturally use humor as a way to explore and connect. Therapy needs to be a safe space to be messy and broken, but can also be used for playful curiosity and creativity.

My core values are faith, family, social and economic justice. My worldview is quite simple. You see, I believe that everyone has a right to be in a good place mentally physically and spiritually. I find that I have evolved into a change agent - which is a natural profession for a social worker. The same steps that I have taken to secure my life, mentally physically and emotionally, are the very same steps I am willing to assist my patients/clients in taking. My specialties lie in my abilities to move a person or a family from a place of dysfunction to functionality. I strive to improve the quality of life those whom I counsel. My theoretical framework a solution focused, interwoven with resiliency theory, using a strength-based approach. I am just a chat away if you need me – 'how may I help you?"

Something worthwhile to remember is that it is your first time living. A lot of the skills to help us lead the happiest and healthiest life aren't taught to us and have a pretty steep learning curve. Therapy is about meeting you where you are and creating an understanding of what your mind is doing and why your body is responding the way it is. Whether you just want to brush up on coping skills or deep dive into patterns you recognize but can never seem to break, there's a place for you in therapy!
