Therapists for college students near New York University
I have clinical experience at a large university counseling center in New York, and my time there made me realize how much I like working with college students of all kinds. I specialize in working with individuals experiencing adjustment issues, relationship distress, stress-related problems, trauma effects, depression and mood dysregulation, and life transitions. I emphasize an integrative, eclectic approach to healing and wellness that includes psychodynamic psychotherapy and mind/body awareness. I'll help you explore feelings, sensations, and past experiences, making sense of what we discover and creating the changes necessary for a more vibrant life.
Life isn’t always easy. Sometimes, even the strongest people amongst us need a little bit of help to work through some of life’s more challenging problems. Everyone has battles to fight and hurdles to overcome at some point. Whether you struggle with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, or any other issue, you should know that there is hope for a better tomorrow. You might be initially hesitant to seek out help and support for personal matters, but when you do, you will feel confident that you are taking a courageous first step towards getting to a better place and being a better you. My practice specializes in treating individuals, couples and families, and through years of experience, I’m confident that no problem is too great to overcome. Through therapy, there is always a way to address the issues you face and learn coping strategies to help you both right now and in the future.

Janet Shortall (she/her/hers) is a mental health counselor with over 30 years of experience providing trauma-informed care and support to university students and staff at Cornell University as a student services professional. Janet's approach to counseling integrates various modalities, including Client-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Her clinical focus is on the experiences of undergraduate and graduate students coping with depression and/or anxiety as well as with older adults struggling with romantic relationships, grief and loss, trauma, and work-life balance. You deserve to re-connect with yourself and others. I would be honored to partner with you and support your nervous system in accessing more ease, empowerment, and joy. Maybe you’re carrying the weight of stress or trauma, feeling stuck in cycles of anxiety, or experiencing pain and tension in your body. Or you may be functioning well on the outside, but feeling disconnected from purpose, meaning, or belonging. Whatever brings you here, I'm so glad you've taken this step. I specialize in trauma-informed therapy with a strong foundation in social justice, offering a compassionate space for healing and reconnection. My approach is collaborative and respectful of your inner strengths. Together, we’ll revisit past wounds when necessary, but always with intention and safety; not just to talk, but to heal. I integrate EMDR, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, parts work, mindfulness tools, and somatic approaches to support lasting resilience and emotional clarity. My practice is inclusive, affirming, and grounded in deep respect for all living beings. If you’ve experienced discrimination or systemic harm, I offer a space where your story is seen and honored. Therapy doesn’t have to re-traumatize. It can be a doorway to relief, confidence, and peace. If this sounds like what you need, I’d love to hear from you.

My Philosophy Therapy should be a safe place to talk about what is bothering you. It’s a place to gain self-awareness and insight and work toward feeling better with a qualified therapist who cares. It should be affordable and accessible. It should be tailored to your needs alone. And it shouldn’t last for years! How does that sound? I am a licensed Mental Health Counselor. I have a BA from the University of Michigan and an MA in Mental Health Counseling from New York University where I graduated summa cum laude. I spent three years in the Counseling Unit at Long Island University working with college-age students focusing on crisis management, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, stress, individuation, suicidal thoughts and much more. I am a referral resource for the University of Pennsylvania, Adelphi University, Long Island University and Molloy College. I currently have a private practice in East Norwich where I work with older teenagers and adults.
People seek counseling / therapy for many reasons - to gain understanding and insights, make changes, process experiences, for support and encouragement, and many others. Whether you are looking for a safe place to discuss whatever is on your mind, are interested in making life changes, or just want to give therapy a try, I welcome the opportunity to meet with you and see how I may be able to help. You can count on me to be reliable, truthful, and kind. My approach to therapy recognizes the importance of building a strong therapeutic relationship. I identify as queer and specialize in working with members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. I am an affirming practitioner. I have over 20 years of experience working with college and graduate students in college counseling centers, and as a result I've had the privilege of working with many people from all around the world. My therapeutic approach is culturally informed and integrates a whole-person perspective along with socio-cultural/political awareness and acknowledgement of the impact of systemic barriers on functioning. I am mindful of my own areas of privilege and how I show up in spaces and may be perceived by others. I attend to how I perceive others based on my own life experiences. I'm always working to educate myself and challenge my assumptions and biases. I read, try to keep up on the news (around the world, not just in the U.S.), and try to engage in conversations with people from various backgrounds. If you would like to have a brief, introductory conversation to discuss what you are looking for and how I may be able to help, please give me a call or send an email. An initial screening consultation is free. I look forward to hearing from you.

We are a psychotherapy group practice in Rye, New York. Our mission is to help people live their best lives. We do this by offering evidence-based psychotherapy and psycho-educational services for people to learn and practice strategies that promote resilience and persistence so they can live more embodied, joyful and purposeful lives in the face of life’s challenges. One of our specialties is working with emerging adults. Emerging adulthood is a more self-focused time of identity exploration, with the young person poised on the cusp of opportunity, attempting to actively create the future ahead while also feeling the inherent instability of the fledging process of as well. Navigating the demands of life before and after college, finding an alternative path to college, and transitioning to a new career and new relationships is challenging. It can feel overwhelming. You do not have to do this alone. We offer a variety of solutions that assist in the following ways: *Exploring identity development in a safe and confidential setting *Learning to negotiate conflicts with peers and adults *Increasing self-regulation *Exploring role transitions within the family l Becoming more independent from family *Creating more intimate friendships and relationships with peers * Consolidating identity and self-regulation *Developing greater organization and time management skills *Making healthier lifestyle choices *Learning to be assertive *Establishing oneself as a capable and valued person within society Did you know? Emerging adults are particularly at-risk for mental health issues. In a given year, over 40% of U.S. 18 to 29 year-olds meet the criteria for a psychiatric disorder, a higher rate than for any other adult age group. The most common disorders are anxiety (22.3%), substance use (22.0%), and mood disorder (22.0%). We are here to help!
*I am currently meeting with clients via telehealth or in person* My approach to therapy is client-centered at its core, providing a judgment-free zone to explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I trust my clients to know what they are looking for out of therapy, so we’ll collaborate and decide on goals together. You'll set the tone, pace, and agenda. I gently guide you as we talk through worries, learn new skills, or better understand what drives your habits, behaviors, and emotions. I love to laugh with my clients, so let’s have some fun too. Trauma has always been present in the work that I do. For that reason, I pursued advanced training and evidence-based treatments to adequately address the level of trauma my clients experience. My modality of choice is EMDR and I use EMDR with the majority of my clients. When not using EMDR, I use a non-directive Client Centered Therapy approach. Testing: I am able to complete testing in the areas of learning disorders, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, personality disorders, and trauma/dissociation. I do not complete testing that is for the court system or custody evaluations. My assessments are comprehensive and lengthy, so they are not always covered by insurance. Please contact me with questions.
If you've ever felt caught between worlds, or like your path hasn't quite followed the expected script, I get it — I've lived that too. I work with individuals of all ages who struggle with self-criticism, people-pleasing, and difficulty asserting their needs in relationships or life decisions. Working primarily from a psychodynamic approach, I help clients explore the deeper patterns and early experiences that shape their present thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Together, we'll investigate unexamined beliefs and influences that may be holding you back from living a life more fully like your own.

Hi, I have been in private practice for the past seven years. Before that I worked in junior-senior high schools, mainly in Rochester, NY. I have worked with many clients with anxiety and depression and have helped many teens stop self-harming behaviors. I feel that I am relaxed, laid back, and a good listener.
