Therapists for college students near New York University
Welcome! I'm Casey Nordberg, a Limited Permit Mental Health Counselor (MHC-LP) in Brooklyn. I work with individuals of all ages, specializing in trauma, attachment and relationship issues, and life transitions. With a background working with families in child welfare and private practice, I bring a nuanced perspective to the therapeutic space, creating a safe environment for a diverse population of patients to explore the experiences that have shaped who they are today. This person-centered, compassion-driven lens supports those navigating emotional struggles, relationship challenges, and feelings of stagnation. In a fast-moving city that often rewards us for pushing forward at the expense of our well-being, taking the step to seek support shows real bravery, and I don't take that courage and trust lightly. I believe everyone has lived experience worth exploring with care, and I'm honored to help you find insight into your history and clarity on the steps ahead as I get to know you and we start this journey together. I am dedicated to meeting you where you are, centering your experiences as we work together to understand and move through what's difficult. Because life's ruptures most often occur in the context of relationships, I believe that building a healing, reparative relationship is one of the most important parts of therapy. That’s why I lead with empathy and warmth, taking a holistic, culturally humble approach, integrating relational and psychodynamic work with evidence-based strategies like motivational interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness techniques, so that treatment can be tailored to what actually fits your life. In our work together, we'll collaborate to understand and gently challenge the thought patterns and behaviors that keep you feeling stuck, while honoring the role these strategies have played in helping you survive difficult experiences in the past. From there, we'll find the tools and coping skills that feel right for you, working toward clarity, self-compassion, and meaningful, sustainable change. My path to becoming a therapist began with stressful experiences within my own family growing up: illness and loss, family members' mental illness and substance misuse, and the complex relational dynamics that come with intergenerational trauma and colliding cultural norms. This experience shaped my interest in child and family mental health, and my drive to walk alongside people of all ages as they make sense of what they've been through. Outside of the therapy room, I love spending time in nature, exploring parks around the city on walks, going on runs, and picnics. Coming from a family of artists and creatives, I enjoy dancing to live music, visiting art museums, and painting with watercolors. On lower-key days, I adore curling up with a cup of tea, a good book, and my two cats.
I am a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) specializing in anxiety and depression, with a focus on youth and young adults. As a partner in your healing journey, I help you navigate life changes, relationships, and coming-of-age issues, with a steadfast belief in transparency and relationship building. You can always come to me as a friend. I look forward to learning and growing with you together. My approach draws on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT), along with talk therapy and play therapy, all in service of helping you build the tools to live a healthy and happy life. Real-life experience helps me connect with you, creating a space that feels comfortable and familiar. Every patient is unique, and I allow you the space to dissect those experiences. My path to becoming a therapist started with my own mental health journey. Everything I preach, I practice, and would never ask a patient to do anything I would not do myself. Through this approach combined with compassionate and culturally responsive care, I hope to normalize therapy in Black and brown communities. When I’m outside the office, I love photography, playing sports, and sometimes even getting a new tattoo!
Hi, I’m a queer-identified therapist who is passionate about creating a safe, affirming space for LGBTQIA+ individuals, couples, and adolescents, as well as people in non-traditional relationships]. I believe therapy should be a place where all parts of you are welcome—without judgment, without assumptions, and without having to educate your therapist about your identity or lifestyle. I work with adults, teens, and couples navigating a range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, mood disorders, life transitions, relationship stress, trauma, and burnout. Whether you're exploring your identity, managing emotional overwhelm, or navigating complex relational dynamics, my goal is to support you with compassion and evidence-based care. I use an integrative approach to care, basead on your needs. In our work together, we’ll balance insight and self-exploration with skill-building and practical strategies, so you can feel more grounded, connected, and empowered in your daily life. My style is warm, collaborative, and deeply respectful of your lived experience.
As a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner with more than 16 years of healthcare experience, my practice is rooted in patient-centered, holistic, trauma-informed care for people at every stage of life. Whether you're navigating stress, anxiety, or mood disorders; facing a major life transition; working through grief or trauma; or exploring questions of identity and relationships, including within the LGBTQ+ community, you'll find a space here that is welcoming, stigma free, and free of judgment. Building genuine rapport is at the heart of everything I do. When you walk through the door, my hope is that you feel safe enough to share your story. Consider me a true collaborator in your care. Together, we'll work toward self-discovery and the kind of mental health that feels meaningful to you. No two people are alike, which is why my approach is individualized, collaborative, and holistic. Showing up for you exactly where you are, without preconceptions or pressure, is something I hold as a core commitment. Partnering with you to define your goals and build a path toward them is what I find most fulfilling about this work. In our sessions, you can expect a warm, calm, and nonjudgmental environment where your comfort comes first. Drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) alongside humanistic and integrative methods, I bring together techniques from multiple approaches to create a personalized treatment plan that fits your unique personality and needs. The result is care that feels less like a formula and more like a conversation. Long before I became a psychiatric nurse practitioner, people in my life would come to me when they needed someone to listen. Friends, family members, and loved ones often said that talking with me helped them through difficult moments. That feedback stayed with me and quietly shaped the direction my career would take. As my healthcare career evolved, so did my appreciation for the depth of emotional support that patients need alongside medical care. Walking alongside people through medical crises, serious illness, and grief deepened my commitment to empathetic, whole-person care and led me to the work I do today. Warmth and a nurturing presence are things I bring to every appointment. When I'm not in the office, you'll often find me outside, walking through nature or settling into a meditation or yoga practice. Creativity is a big part of how I recharge too. Drawing, painting, writing poetry, and music all play a role in my life outside of work. As an amateur musician, I enjoy singing, learning keyboard, and playing flute, less for performance and more for the joy and relaxation it brings.
I am a licensed psychologist in New York, Florida and Connecticut and certified by PSYPACT to provide telehealth services to clients in states participating in PSYPACT. I provide treatment for adolescents and adults across the lifespan using cognitive behavior therapy. Treatment is time-limited, goal-directed and structured. My approach is collaborative, respectful, compassionate and logical. I introduce ways to actively cope when in distress, how to gain broader perspective, improve problem-solving skills, and develop the confidence to persevere when dealing with life's various challenges.
As a social worker with a clinical focus, my expertise includes facilitating group and individual sessions, case management and welfare systems with low-income populations, LGBTQ+ identities, depression and anxiety, suicidality and self-harm, and eating disorders/disordered eating populations. I work with people of all backgrounds, with a particular focus on queer and young patients. Together, we navigate interpersonal relationships (including the relationship you have with yourself), body image distress and gender dysphoria, internalized homophobia, trauma resolution, harm reduction, and finding alternatives to harm that lead to a life worth living. Grounded in a commitment to social justice, I aim to be compassionate and realistic in how I approach your care. I look forward to creating meaning and understanding in our work together, and promise to be your biggest cheerleader along the way. Helping you find strength and meaning in life is something I care deeply about, especially when it comes to creating space for the things you're scared to talk about. Authentic, strengths-based, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive are all words that describe how I show up in our work together, in a warm environment that offers a gentle push when it's needed. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing help me connect you with your true values and intentions in life, leaving behind the thoughts that keep you stuck. There's also room for humor and joy when it's what's needed. Compassionate and tailored to each person's unique needs and goals, my style centers on meeting you where you're at, no matter where that may be. I also leave space for humor and joy when it’s what’s needed. My path to becoming a therapist began with my journey to becoming a yoga teacher. As I strengthened my yoga practice, my love for community, connection, and holding space flourished. This experience built my passion for providing a space for people to show up as they are and ask for what they need. Today, I bring a systems approach to each session, examining what you're going through from the macro level down to the micro level, to offer you a holistic understanding of your experience. You'll usually find me on my yoga mat, curled up with a good book, or spending time with my cat and my friends. I'm always on the hunt for the next great fidget toy and a new coffee shop with genuinely good coffee, and there's nothing like laying in the park or on the beach to recharge. I also love creating art and getting lost in a good crime documentary.
I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) who works with children, adolescents, young adults, women, and families. I’m dedicated to helping patients navigate the lasting effects of trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, life transitions, and other experiences that leave people feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck.  At the center of my practice is the belief that every individual is the expert on their own life, one that continues to help me be a compassionate partner in your journey toward healing, growth, and self-acceptance. I look forward to creating a space together where you feel safe to explore challenges, celebrate growth, and discover the strengths that already exist within you.  My approach is trauma-informed and attachment-based, incorporating mindfulness practices to support healing and personal growth. It's also warm, person-centered, and collaborative, grounded in the belief that the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important parts of the healing process. Building a genuine, personalized connection with each person I work with is something I'm passionate about, because feeling safe, supported, and empowered makes all the difference. In practice, that means drawing on a range of approaches tailored to your unique goals and strengths. These include person-centered therapy, trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, narrative therapy, psychodynamic therapy, attachment theory, and elements of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Together, these tools help you build insight, strengthen self-compassion, develop healthier coping strategies, and create meaningful, lasting change. Sessions are flexible by design; our work takes the shape you need it to. From a young age, I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to supporting and connecting with others, and was often described as empathetic and compassionate – qualities that, in time, pointed me clearly toward a career in mental health.  In college, I discovered a passion for psychology and the opportunity to better understand the complexities of human behavior. That curiosity led me to pursue my Master of Social Work, deepening my understanding of the ways mental health, life experiences, relationships, and larger systems shape our well-being.   These experiences strengthened my commitment to and passion for personalized care, and confirmed what I'd believed for a long time: that healing happens best in a space that feels warm, collaborative, and genuinely yours. Now, I bring this same curiosity, compassion, and respect for your unique story to every session. When I'm not in session, you'll often find me listening to a mystery or psychological thriller audiobook, crocheting, or spending an afternoon in a nearby park with my favorite salty snack — chips and dip or cheese and crackers, to be specific. At home, I'm endlessly entertained by my two cats: Penny, a tortie, and Ozzy, an orange tabby. Discovering new movies and TV shows is another favorite pastime, and I'm always happy to talk about my love of food!

Whether you're working through the weight of complex family dynamics, struggling to understand how your past is shaping your present, or simply trying to find your footing, you've come to the right place. As a Licensed Master Social Worker with five years of experience, my work centers on helping people navigate anxiety, depression, and major life transitions. While much of my work connects deeply with people in their 20s and 30s, these experiences are universal, and anyone navigating similar challenges is welcome here. My goal is to help you make sense of what you're going through, better understand yourself, and find a path forward that feels clear, realistic, and genuinely meaningful. Therapy with me is grounded, honest, and real. You won't have to meet me halfway; I'll meet you exactly where you are. The way we relate to ourselves and others is often shaped by patterns formed long before we were aware of them. Understanding where those patterns come from, and how they're affecting your life today, is at the heart of how we'll work together. My approach is warm, curious, and completely nonjudgmental. Drawing from an integrative framework that includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), psychodynamic therapy, and Internal Family Systems (IFS), we'll explore what's keeping you stuck and build the insight and tools needed to move forward in a way that feels sustainable. Sessions are collaborative by design, shaped around your unique needs, goals, and experiences. My style is direct and down to earth, because the most meaningful progress happens when things are broken down in a way that feels clear, practical, and relevant to your life. Having faced my own mental health challenges and experienced firsthand what it feels like to have those concerns dismissed, I came to this work with deep conviction. Normalizing mental health conversations and creating a space where you feel genuinely understood isn't just a professional value; it's a personal one. Every session, I bring a warm, direct, and grounded presence with the intention of making sure you never feel unheard. Outside of sessions, you can find me catching up on the latest shows and films, hunting for new music, or heading to Pilates. Reading, crocheting, and other crafts give me a creative outlet I genuinely love, and I'm always up for a good shopping trip or the chance to explore somewhere new. Travel, in particular, feeds my curiosity in ways that carry right back into the work.
As a licensed mental health counselor, I specialize in anxiety, depression, trauma, and attachment issues for people of all backgrounds, with a particular focus on women and LGBTQ+ individuals. I’m here to help you navigate identity, life transitions, grief, relationship challenges, uncertainty, and self-doubt while reconnecting with your strengths and creating meaningful change. My hope is to be a steady, affirming presence who will support and challenge you with compassion as you work toward your goals, because I believe meaningful change begins in the safety of a trusting therapeutic relationship. Together, we can deepen your understanding of yourself, strengthen your relationships, and move through life with greater confidence and ease. Psychodynamic work and Mindfulness ground my approach, which is relational, curious, and culturally attuned. I'm passionate about exploring how our experiences shape who we are, and I blend these approaches with evidence-based interventions to support you in creating lasting, meaningful change through insight, connection, self-compassion, and action. In our sessions, you'll find an affirming and compassionate space where all parts of you are welcome. My style is warm, collaborative, and gently challenging, and I tailor our work to your unique experiences, values, and goals. My path to becoming a therapist began long before graduate school. As a child, I often found myself at the center of playground drama, wondering, "How did I get here?" and "Why is everyone acting the way they are?" That early curiosity about people, relationships, and the stories behind our behaviors stayed with me throughout my life, growing into a deep commitment to providing empathetic, affirming, and culturally responsive care. Now, I value bringing warmth, curiosity, and authenticity to each session, creating a space where patients can better understand themselves, their relationships, and the patterns that shape their lives. I have loads of hobbies! I love everything from collaging and oil painting to singing at karaoke and running.

Two years into my work as a licensed master social worker, I've learned that healing rarely happens in isolation; it happens in relationship. That's the lens I bring to helping adults work through anxiety, depression, self-esteem, relationships, attachment, and trauma. Relationships and trauma are where I focus most closely, alongside support for OCD and sex therapy for patients of all types and backgrounds. What guides me isn't a technique so much as a set of commitments: honesty, open communication, trust building, and empathy. Those commitments are what make our work together collaborative, safe, and supportive – not just words I use to describe therapy, but the actual conditions I try to create in the room. I look forward to empathizing with you, uplifting you, and standing alongside you as we do this work together. At the heart of my work is the simple belief that real change happens through real connection. My approach is honest, warm, and built on that connection first. I tailor the way I work to each person in front of me, because no two paths to healing look the same. Expect a space that's nonjudgmental, empathetic, and truly collaborative, where you're never just a set of symptoms to manage. I lean on psychodynamic, trauma-informed, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approaches to help you build both confidence and insight, but how we get there depends on what you need. You'll also find that I don't take myself too seriously, even when the work is hard – a little humor tends to open doors that pure seriousness can't. Directness, empathy, and compassion are non-negotiables for me, and so is making sure you walk away from our sessions feeling seen, safe, and genuinely supported. My path to becoming a therapist began through my own experience in therapy while navigating personal challenges. Witnessing the impact of a safe, supportive therapeutic relationship inspired me to help others find that same sense of understanding and hope. As the descendant of Holocaust survivors, I also recognize the lasting effects of intergenerational trauma and the resilience that can emerge through healing. My Jewish values, particularly the concept of tikkun olam (repairing the world), continue to guide my work and commitment to serving others. These experiences deepened my dedication to providing warm, trauma-informed, and evidence-based care. They are why I strive to create a collaborative, nonjudgmental space where patients feel genuinely seen, supported, and empowered to navigate life's challenges and create meaningful, lasting change. I love performing comedy, working on pottery, traveling, biking, reading, swimming, and playing pickleball.
You might be someone who generally has things together. You’re responsible, capable, and used to handling things on your own, but internally, things feel harder than it looks. Your mind may be constantly racing, second-guessing, or getting stuck on certain thoughts. Maybe anxiety, OCD, perfectionism, or stress is making it harder to enjoy school, relationships, or everyday life, or you're navigating a major transition and feeling overwhelmed behind the scenes. I work with students who want to better understand what’s going on internally and learn how to respond differently. Many of my clients are high-achieving and motivated but feel stuck in patterns of anxiety, overthinking, perfectionism, or avoidance that are hard to break alone. Together, we'll work on changing how you relate to difficult thoughts and emotions so they have less power over your daily life. I also work with students coping with chronic illness, chronic pain, or physical symptoms that don’t have clear medical answers. I help clients understand the mind-body connection and how stress, anxiety, and the nervous system can influence physical symptoms while taking their experiences seriously. My approach is practical, collaborative, and warm. I strive to create a space where you feel comfortable sharing what’s on your mind without judgment while building evidence-based skills you can use in everyday life. My goal is to help you feel more confident, resilient, and better equipped to navigate life's challenges.

I have many years experience helping people with their emotional problems. I work with individuals of all ages from adolescence to old age. My approach is listening-focused. No two persons who have come to see me have had the same issues and struggles to contend with. So what is needed is close, attentive listening so I can know how you can most benefit from my help. Many patients prefer to focus on the here and now problems they feel most immediately. But others want to explore their root causes in earlier relations and problems. I try to tailor my practice to work at either or both these levels of intensity.
I work with a variety of people whose active, creative lives have been interrupted by depression, mania, anxiety, mourning, and trauma. Psychotherapy with me is a process of guided expression. Thoughts and feelings, dreams and fantasies, desires and fears are given voice – loud, clear, and without judgment. The experience of formulating authentic verbal and emotional expressions can be transformative in and of itself. Also, as patterns in your way of being become clear, you can begin to consider alternatives, find courage to change, and experience what is commonly known as freedom. I think mental health means developing a Full Self – a progressive version of you that can love hard and work hard, understand complex motivations, and experience feelings, including painful ones, without being overwhelmed. In this process, I draw from extensive, ongoing training in both psychodynamics and cognitive-behavioral work. My training began in 2005 at Bellevue’s Psychiatric Emergency Room and continued at renowned New York City hospitals and institutions. I’ve been in private practice in Brooklyn since 2011. Also, I was an adjunct professor in a clinical Ph.D. program for many years and supervised trainees at two college clinics and psychiatry residents at Mt. Sinai Hospital. My publications are in the areas of loneliness, personality disorders, and art.
With over 20 years of experience in clinical care, education, and research, I provide thoughtful, evidence-based psychiatry support tailored to high performing adults seeking clarity, stability, and wellness. My goal is to provide you both empathic and evidence-based support that leads to sustaining improvement.
Hi, I’m Jennifer Shrier, a psychotherapist specializing in working with college students, young adults, and adults. I understand that the college years can be both exciting and overwhelming — a time of transition, pressure, identity development, relationship challenges, and increasing independence. My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, and supportive. I aim to create a space where clients feel comfortable being themselves and talking openly about what they’re going through, without judgment. I work with students navigating anxiety, stress, depression, self-esteem concerns, relationship issues, academic pressure, life transitions, and questions around identity and direction. In therapy, I believe the relationship itself is important. I strive to help clients feel understood while also building insight, coping skills, resilience, and greater self-awareness. My style is thoughtful and engaged, and I tailor treatment to each individual’s needs and goals. Reaching out for support can feel difficult, and I value creating a space where students can feel safe, supported, and empowered as they navigate this stage of life.
